Google Inc is working on a new tablet boasting the technology to capture 3D imagery, as the company leads its way through the devices market.
The seven-inch slate is apparently a bigger version of a prototype smartphone made by the company’s Project Tango, which was released in February.
It sports two cameras, infrared depth sensors, and highly customized software.
The search engine is to begin producing about 4,000 prototypes of the tablet, which is also being developed by Project Tango, in June.
The smartphone version has a regular camera, a motion-sensing one, and integrated depth sensors mounted between the two.
Google’s Project Tango webpage notes the sensor suite “allow[s] the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second updating its position and orientation in real-time combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you.”
The tablet could be unveiled ahead of Google I/O 2014, scheduled to take place on June 25 and June 26.
Google, which recently overtook Apple in terms of value, leads a contrasting market strategy to the latter by letting developers experiment with its more futuristic devices in the hope that they will create applications that will help the devices appeal to consumers.
