Two South African police officers have been arrested for allegedly beating an unarmed man in Cape Town.
Moses Dlamini, a spokesman for the Independent Police Directorate of South Africa, said Saturday that the two officers would appear in court on March 10 on charges of assault.
The arrests came after video footage emerged on March 7 showing the two armed uniformed police officers together with security guards punching and kicking the man, while his arms are held at his sides.
During the assault, one of the officers undressed the man leaving him exposed in the road.
The police attack was recorded by one witness in a building nearby and the footage was later published online. The emerged video prompted public outrage among South Africans.
“The arrest would not have happened without the vigilance of the public,” Dlamini stated.
Police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana said that police management had watched the video footage and confirmed that the two police officers were from Cape Town Central Police Force.
The assaulted man was later identified as Nigerian national Clement Emekensha.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) commented on the police beating, saying it would investigate the incident.
“It is very concerning that these incidents of brutality continue to happen despite continuous condemnation from rights groups, and many reassurances from the police top management,” said SAHRC spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
South Africa’s police are often embroiled in allegations of brutality. Last August, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) revealed that reports of police brutality in South Africa have soared by 313 percent in a decade.
The institute also warned that only one in 100 cases against police officers ends in a conviction.
