Russian President Vladimir Putin says the new post-Soviet alliance with Belarus and Kazakhstan is set to launch in 2015, with hopes that Ukraine will join the union.
The final pieces were in place for the 2015 inaugural launch of the Eurasian Economic Union, Putin said following talks with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow on Tuesday.
“Government representatives of the troika (Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus)…have developed the draft of the institutional part of the Eurasian Economic Union agreement,” Putin said.
“This document determines the international legal status, organizational frameworks, the objectives and mechanisms of how the union will operate starting on January 1, 2015,” Putin added.
The Russian president promised that the new union would provide a source of growth for all involved, hinting that Ukraine would also join the alliance.
Last month, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a cooperation deal with the European Union, deciding to go with an economic and trade agreement with Moscow instead.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara said that Kiev and Moscow intended to continue to “coordinate (their) foreign policies.”
Putin earlier announced the creation of a post-Soviet economic alliance that could one day be joined by Turkey and India.
The union would replace the Eurasian Customs Union in an answer to the 28-nation EU bloc.
