Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the eastern city of Dresden in Germany, where thousands of troops are deployed to help flood-hit areas.
On Wednesday, a city spokeswoman said that some 600 people needed to leave their homes in Dresden because of the flood. Electricity cut off was reported in parts of the city.
The military also said that around 4,000 German troops have been deployed in the area.
Spokeswoman Heike Grossman said the peak of the deluge in Dresden was expected later in the day, adding that flood waters are heading north and east in the country along rivers including the Elbe and Danube.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited some of the areas hit by the flood on Tuesday and promised 100m euros in emergency aid.
“I spoke to residents who are already busy with clean-up work and I am aware that it will take weeks. The damage and loss of income are a long-term problem and therefore our support will not dwindle,” Merkel said.
Hundreds had to be rescued from their homes in other European countries such as Austria, Poland, and Switzerland following days of heavy rainfall.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas declared a state of emergency on June 2 and promised relief aid.
This comes while the Czech Republic capital, Prague, is preparing for more flooding as the Vltava River is continuing to rise.
Evacuations also took place in Switzerland after officials in Basel said the Rhine River rose to a dangerously high level.
