An American female tourist has been gang-raped by a group of truckers in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh, police say.
The 30-year-old woman was picked up by three men in a truck late on Monday while hitchhiking to her hotel in Manali town, a tourist resort in the foothills of the Himalayas.
The driver and two accomplices then took her to an isolated spot and raped her for over an hour, she told police.
“She is recovering fast and helping us move forward with the investigation. She has given us details of how the men looked, what they were wearing, which will help us,” said senior police officer V.K. Dhawan.
“She has identified the truck type. It is typically used to transport construction materials so we are checking construction sites to see which trucks were in use at that time,” he added.
The attack on the American woman, the latest case of sexual violence against women in India, came only two days after a 21-year-old Irish charity worker was raped in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.
On March 15, a Swiss tourist who was on a cycling trip with her husband was gang-raped by a group of six Indians in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
The victim was setting up camp with her husband near a forest when a group of men assaulted them, tying up the husband and raping the wife.
On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and savagely beaten in a moving bus and thrown out on to the street of the capital, New Delhi. She succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Singapore on December 29, 2012.
The horrific nature of the crime shocked Indians, who thronged the streets across the country, demanding protection for women and capital punishment for rape, which currently carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in the world’s second-most-populous country.
