Argentinians gathered in capital Buenos Aires after a nationwide campaign was launched to collect one million signatures against a UK-backed referendum on the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, Press TV reports.
People of all walks of life including war veterans, students, and artists gathered at the Obelisk monument to say that South Atlantic territories seized by the UK centuries ago, belong to Argentina and that the two sides should reach an agreement through dialogue.
The move was launched by the Peoples for Malvinas organization, from the Argentine Center of International Studies.
“We know it and history shows that the UK has taken half of the world. I don’t want to sound aggressive but that’s the truth. We have no other option but dialogue…” Diego Rodriguez, a member of the Peoples for Malvinas said.
The signatures will be sent to the United Nations in June.
This is while British inhabitants of the disputed islands, also known as the Falkland Islands, have voted in the referendum to determine whether the residents wish to remain under British control or not.
Argentina’s Foreign Ministry has accused the British government of “manipulating” the bilateral dispute and status of the islands through its referendum.
The two countries fought a 74-day-long war in 1982 over the islands, which ended with the British side claiming victory over the Argentineans.
Located about 300 miles off Argentina’s coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, the islands have been declared part of the British Overseas Territories since Britain established its colonial rule on the territories in 1833.
