British Foreign Secretary William Hague has accused Argentina of “bullying and intimidatory” behavior following his Argentine counterpart Hector Timmerman’s comments that the Malvinas Islands (Falklands) will be controlled from Buenos Aires in 20 years.
Hague insisted that the South Atlantic islands will remain under British rule for centuries, labeling Timmerman’s remarks as “fantasy” and counter-productive.
Argentina has been pushing London for talks on the sovereignty of the territory that Britain illegally occupied in 1833.
Britain is rather proposing a referendum on the islands to decide whether they desire to remain part of Britain.
However, Argentina has dismissed any such move arguing Britain has expelled the original inhabitants of the archipelago and replaced them with British subjects that would understandably vote for a British rule.
“The Falklands islanders do not exist. What exists is British citizens who live in the Islas Malvinas,” Timmerman told a press conference in London last Wednesday.
The Argentinean Foreign Minister had earlier also refused to attend a London meeting to discuss the Malvinas after Hague admitted that the Falkland government representatives will also be present.
“The United Nations does not recognize a third party in the conflict,” Timmerman said.
