Brazil says it will discuss buying Russian Pantsir-S1 defense system and Igla anti-aircraft missiles during the upcoming visit by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to Brasilia.
Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces General Jose Carlos De Nardi said in a statement on Sunday, “We are interested in acquiring three batteries of Pantsir-S1 missiles and two batteries of Igla missiles.”
De Nardi said that Medvedev was scheduled to visit the Brazilian capital later this month.
Pantsir-S1 can engage targets up to 20 kilometers (12 miles) by missiles and four kilometers (2.5 miles) using cannons, according to the KBP.
Igla is a man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile.
De Nardi also stated that Brazil was eager to receive the technologies of the missiles from Russia after signing purchase deals.
Pantsir-S1 is a combined short to medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system produced by Russia’s KBP company.
The defense missile system, which is equipped with a fire-control radar and electro-optical sensor, two 30-mm cannons and up to twelve 57E6 radio-command guided short-range missiles, is designed to take on a variety of targets flying at low altitudes.
