The very first of six Batmobiles produced for the 1960s original Batman TV series has sold at auction for $4.6 million reaching the previous record for a celebrity car, the Aston Martin DB5 featured in “Goldfinger” with Sean Connery.

The car was designed by Hollywood customizer George Barris and made for $15,000 from a 1955 concept Ford Futura, bought by the filmmakers for a symbolic $1, The Hollywood Reporter says. It took Barris just 15 days to create the legendary car in 1966.

The car has remained in Barris’ personal collection and was auctioned along with several Batman paraphernalia, such as a Batphone. The car is in perfect condition and is also ready to hit the streets – the ride is road legal.

The out of this world black and fiery-red ride, looking more like a spacecraft, was sold to Rick Champagne, a businessman and car collector from the Phoenix area for the upper end of the estimates. The happy owner of the unique car has been a frequent guest at Barrett-Jackson auctions for 15 years.

The new owner was so excited with his latest purchase that he even promised to garage his new ride inside his own home.

“I’m going to tear down a wall and put in my living room,” he said.
