In the wake of Canada’s unilateral move to close its embassy in Tehran and break off diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic, Italy has announced that it will represent Ottawa’s interests in Iran.
“Italy’s Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi today announced Italy’s decision to respond positively to the request to represent Canadian interests in Iran following the closure of their embassy in Tehran,” the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
“This decision was taken based on the traditional relations taken with this important friend and ally. Italy will ensure the protection of Canadian interests in Iran respecting international convention,” it added.
On September 7, Ottawa closed its embassy in Tehran and ordered the Iranian diplomats in Canada to leave the country within five days.
The Canadian government has also frozen the bank accounts of many Iranian nationals living in Canada and banned money transfers to Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry slammed Canada’s unilateral decision to sever ties with Tehran, calling it a “non-professional, unconventional and unjustifiable” move.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi has said the Islamic Republic would examine the legal aspects of Canada’s move and act in accordance with international law.
He described Canada’s move as undiplomatic and said that such reasons as threatening a country’s national security could be considered as grounds for breaking ties, but Iran has never threatened the interests of the Western countries.
