The Canadian federal government is getting tough with fraudulent immigrants as they plan on stripping the citizenship of more than 3,100 people, who they believe have cheated the system.
Immigration minister Jason Kenney said thousands more are being investigated, but admitted that only 19 of the 3,139 Canadians’ citizenships have been revoked, and stated that this is part of a long-term crackdown which will take several years to complete.
“Canadian citizenship is not for sale,” Kenney told The Canadian Press.
“We will continue to take strong measures to combat the industry of crooked immigration agents here and abroad who seek to devalue Canadian citizenship by creating fake proof of residency and committing other forms of fraud.”
The minister added that letters have been sent to 530 people, informing them that the government plans to strip their citizenship.
Cheating the system is never good, and scammers who steal money from the uninformed are even worse. So to prevent this from happening, Kenney is planning on introducing an amendment to the Citizenship Act which would require immigration consultants to be members of a regulatory body. This would in turn, clean-up and prevent phony consultants from thievery.
With that said, would revoking citizenships be fair to the people who were tricked into entering Canada via this method; people who still do not realize that what they did is illegal?
Taliban threatens Prince Harry
According to a spokesperson for the Taliban, the terrorist group has plans to “eliminate” Prince Harry, whom was deployed to Afghanistan and is serving a four-month tour.
“We are using all our strength to get rid of him, either by killing or kidnapping,” Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters via telephone interview on Monday.
“We have informed our commanders in Helmand to do whatever they can to eliminate him,” he added.
Britain’s Defence Ministry declined to comment on the threat, but did say that they were comfortable making the Prince’s deployment public, and also felt that Prince Harry and his fellow soldiers would not be at any extra risk.
