South Korea’s Samsung Electronics says it will contest a United States court ruling ordering the company to pay damages to the American rival Apple.
“We will move immediately to file post-verdict motions to overturn this decision in this court and if we are not successful, we will appeal this decision to the Court of Appeals,” Samsung announced in a statement.
The statement came after a US federal jury ruled that Samsung must pay more than USD one billion to Apple for patent violations.
The jury said the South Korean company had copied parts of Apple’s iPad and iPhone designs for its smartphones.
This is while a South Korean court had earlier ruled that Samsung had not copied Apple’s design.
Samsung had stated, in a previous statement, that the verdict was “not the final word” and it would lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices.
“It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies,” the statement added.
The multi-national technology company says it will file post-verdict motions to overturn the court verdict. It is also considering taking the matter to a higher court and appeal the decision if not successful.
