Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano says he held “comprehensive” talks with Iran’s top nuclear negotiator in a “good atmosphere.”
Amano made the remark after a two-hour meeting with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili in Tehran on Monday.
“During the meeting (with Jalili), we discussed a wide spectrum of different issues, including nuclear disarmament, peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthening [the position of] the agency.” Amano told reporters.
He added that certain things remain (to be discussed) but “they will not impede the progress of the negotiations.”
The IAEA chief emphasized that the progress of the talks would definitely have a positive impact on the upcoming negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1).
“These are two different issues but can strengthen one another,” he stated.
Amano renewed his commitment to resolve Iran’s nuclear energy issue through dialogue.
The UN nuclear agency chief, accompanied by the IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards Herman Nackaerts and the agency’s Assistant Director General for Policy Rafael Mariano Grossi, arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials.
Earlier in the day, he held talks with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi.
