A new poll conducted in five European countries shows most people are against imposing sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.
A total of 2,100 adults in Germany, France, Austria, Sweden and Poland responded to the poll which was conducted by the German Marshall Fund via phone, April 23-26, 2012.
The results were made public on May 2, 2012.
Asked whether they were for or against Iran oil sanctions, 61 percent of respondents said they opposed the bans while only 35 percent favored them. Also, four percent said they had no idea.
Foreign minister of the European Union (EU) member states met in Brussels on January 23 and approved new sanctions against Iran which forbid member countries from importing Iranian crude or doing business with its central bank.
The EU sanctions against the Iranian oil sector will come into effect on July 1. Tehran has already cut oil exports to several European countries as part of its countersanctions in response to the EU measure.
The Western bloc says the sanctions are aimed at crippling the Iranian economy. However, Tehran says such acts have already backfired and led to higher prices in the global oil market.
Public opinion and mass media in Europe have bitterly criticized the EU governments’ measure in banning oil imports from Iran.
People are concerned about high fuel prices resulting from an Iran oil ban and its negative effects on the economic situation of their countries which are already struggling with a crippling economic crisis.
Critics say imposing sanctions on Iranian crude will have no effect as the country can find other customers and ways to head off the impact of the sanctions.
