The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says thousands of users might lose their internet connection because of a virus detected in 2007.
The DNSChanger virus has infected about 350,000 PC users worldwide, sending users to unintended and sometimes illegal sites.
The FBI set up “surrogate” servers to keep the infected PCs working, but they decided to “pull the plug” on July 9, 2012, because running the servers is not cheap.
Some 85,000 of the 350,000 infected machines worldwide are in the US and 20,000 are in the UK.
Law enforcement officials and the DNSChanger Working Group have been working together to fight the malware, but millions of people will lose their internet if no solution is reached.
