Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner delivers a speech in front of a picture displaying the Malvinas Islands painted in the same colors as Argentina’s national flag, the government palace, Buenos Aires, February 7, 2012.

Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has announced plans to build a museum dedicated to the Malvinas War to honor the marines that were killed while trying to reclaim the island from the UK.

Fernandez said on Monday that the USD 20-million museum would be inaugurated in August 2013, adding that it would honor the more than 300 marines who were killed after the Belgrano warship sank during the war with Britain in 1982.

The Argentinean president also defended her country’s rights with regard to the Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands).

The Malvinas Islands, located about 300 miles off Argentina’s coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, have been declared as part of the British Overseas Territories since Britain established its colonial rule in the islands in 1833.

Argentina, however, has repeatedly dismissed the British claim over the island.

The 74-day Malvinas War was fought between Britain and Argentina in 1982 over the islands which ended with the British side claiming victory over Argentineans. A year after the war, the UK enforced the British Nationality Act of 1983, which offers citizenship to the islanders.

Tensions between the two countries have re-escalated since 2010 when London authorized oil prospecting around the islands.

  1. More delusion and idiocy. Political use of the dead – can’t get much lower than that.
