German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday called on her country’s allies, specially the US, to fully exploit diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear issue, rather than discussing the possibility of military solution.
In an interview with German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung’s weekend edition, Merkel said that diplomatic solutions to Iran’s nuclear issue “have not exhausted” and there is, thus, no justification for the US to speak of war.
International community should “exploit all the diplomatic room to maneuver and Germany can make a contribution,” she added.
Merkel said instead of debating on whether military attacks could help break the deadlock, world leadership should discuss other priorities.
The United States and its allies have long accused Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran firmly denied that, insisting its right for pursuing nuclear power for civilian purpose.
Amano released the UN nuclear watchdog’s latest report on Iran’s nuclear activities on Tuesday. Many nuclear experts and political pundits even in the West believe that the report carries the US tone and wording.
Political observes say that Israel and the United States dictated the report to Amano on Iran to find a pretext for intensifying pressures on the Islamic Republic.
Once the report was released, not only Iran, but also many world states, including Russia, China and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states, strongly rejected it and blasted the UN nuclear watchdog chief for acting as a White House proxy.
The western diplomats and sources had informed around a month ago that the new report would contain allegations on the basis of some copied documents which have been presented to the IAEA by certain western countries to show that Iran is pursuing a military drive in its nuclear program.
Meantime, Iran underlined that it would not budge “an iota” from its peaceful atomic activities.
Iran has always stressed its full cooperation with the IAEA, and meantime protested that the world body is not fulfilling its duties with regard to Israel.
