The Occupy Wall Street movement, which has gained momentum and attracted anti-corporatism protesters across the globe, marked its one month anniversary on Monday.
The Occupy Wall street (OWS) movement began on September 17 in the financial district of New York City in protest at a number of issues including the wars in the Middle East, US financial crisis and high bonuses for Wall Street executives.
The movement was born after about 150 people set up tents in New York’s Zuccotti Park.
The campaign has spread to a number of cities including Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Boston, as well as hundreds of communities across the US.
While the movement includes people from all walks of life, according to the group’s statement, “The one thing we all have in common is that we are the 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.”
In the early days of the movement, financial analyst and journalist Max Keiser told Press TV that CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co. Jamey Dimon has given “USD 4.6 million to the New York Police Department to beef up police presence on the streets and to crack heads and to violently oppress protesters.”
Police officers in the US have detained nearly 2,000 peaceful protesters in a number of cities and towns over the past month. Protesters have been pressured by authorities to vacate their camps in a number of cities including New York and Washington DC with police using pepper spray and batons to forcibly disperse them.
Protesters have, however, repeatedly vowed not to give in to the pressure, saying that they will keep occupying until their demands are met.
The movement spread across the world on Saturday, with demonstrations taking place in some 951 cities in 83 countries in Europe, North America, South America, Asia as well as Africa.
