Libyans tearing down Gaddafi's Tripoli compound

In a symbolic act of defiance against the remnants of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, Libyan revolutionary fighters have bulldozed the green walls surrounding the notorious Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli. This sprawling fortress, long viewed as a symbol of tyranny and fear during Gaddafi’s four-decade rule, had been inaccessible to Libyans, who avoided even walking near it.

Commander Ahmad Ghargory, leading a revolutionary brigade, expressed the revolutionary decision to tear down this symbol of oppression. The capture and subsequent destruction of Bab al-Aziziya marked a crucial turning point in the civil war, signifying the end of Gaddafi’s rule in late August.

The commander declared that the area would be transformed into a public park, symbolizing a break from the past and offering a space for all Libyans to access freely. The courtyard in front of Gaddafi’s former residence, where he delivered fiery speeches to rally his supporters during the uprising, has already undergone a transformation into a weekly pet market. Tripoli residents now explore the premises like a museum, with vendors selling revolutionary flags and other souvenirs.

This bold move to dismantle Bab al-Aziziya not only signifies a physical demolition but also represents the Libyan people’s eagerness to break free from decades of repression. Despite ongoing challenges, including fighting on multiple fronts and lingering tensions between supporters of the former regime and revolutionary forces, Libyans are determined to move forward.
