Heavy rains and mudslides from Typhoon Talas have left at least 15 people dead and more than 43 others missing in Japan, local media reports.

Evacuation orders and advisories have been issued to 460,000 people in western and central Japan, Kyodo News agency reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says Talas crossed the southern island of Shikoku as well as the island of Honshu overnight.

The agency warned that Talas is likely to cause more flooding and landslides as it moves north toward the Sea of Japan.

A Meteorological Agency official said some more rain is expected even though the storm’s center has moved past Japan and that residents should stay on the alert.

The typhoon hit Japan nearly seven months after a destructive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and an ensuing tsunami struck Japan’s northern coasts.

The tremor triggered a nuclear crisis by knocking out power to a reactor’s cooling systems on Japan’s northeast coast.

The number of dead and missing from Japan’s March 11 quake and tsunami stands at over 28,000, according to the Japanese National Police Agency.
