In Texas there is a 100 year drought. Over 3.5 million acres of Texas have burnt, which is larger than the State of Conn. There have been massive fires in Bastrop, Grimes, Waller, and Montgomery Counties. Over 2,00 homes in the Bastrop area have been burnt and thousands faced forced evacuation. Ranchers are being forced to sell their cattle and horses. There will be several billion dollar agricultural losses of cotton, corn, rice, hay, etc.

This is a very dangerous drought.

What is causing the Texas drought? Is it global warming; sun spots; or predictable weather cycles? Many nations spend millions of dollars trying to record, predict, and at times alter weather. The surprise is Texans were not warned of the coming drought and were not prepared for the drought. On September 8th, The Climate Prediction Center/National Centers for Environmental Prediction NOAA/National Weather Service, Camp Springs, MD 20746-4304 issued a report on the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

ENSO Alert Systems Status LA NINA ADVSORY:

Synopsis: La Nina conditions have returned and are expected to gradually strengthen and continue into the Northern Hemisphere winter 2011-2012. The report explains that the La Nina in the equatorial Pacific Ocean is a cause of the Texas drought and the drought could last well into 2012. La Nina is marked by a cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean resulting in less rain for the southern states, especially Texas. La Nina contributed to the worst drought in Texas history in the 1950’s.

Google ““Climate Prediction Center”” and ““La Nina”” for updates on the impact of La Nina.

The US Drought Monitor classifies the current drought for three-quarters of Texas as the worst stages of drought.

  1. The report fails to mention that officially, a la Niña event ended about 4 months ago, in May. Usually it is followed by an el Niño event but not this time. There’s a link between La Niña / el Niño oscillation and the Antarctic. See http://news.discovery.com/earth/seafloor-ties-la-nia-to-antarctic-melt.html

Short periods of el Niño or what’s jokingly called “la Nada” with long periods of la Niña would suggest an influx of cold meltwater – a link with global warming.
