The UK is facing the possibility of an additional £2.5 billion annual benefits bill for EU migrants as the European Commission accuses the country of violating EU laws by restricting foreigners’ access to the welfare system. Eurocrats have issued a “reasoned opinion,” giving the UK a two-month deadline to align its legislation with EU law or face court action.
The European Commission contends that current restrictions on access to benefits for people from the 26 other EU member states are in violation of EU law. If the Commission’s demands are met, individuals from these states could travel to the UK, declare residency, and immediately qualify for various benefits without contributing to the system.
Estimates of the potential cost to British taxpayers vary between £700 million and £2.5 billion per year. Critics argue that this intrusion into domestic affairs by unelected bureaucrats is unwarranted, and it has raised concerns about the concept of “benefit tourism.”
UKIP leader Nigel Farage expressed frustration with the European Commission’s intervention, stating, “Once again we see the European Commission telling us how to run our country, and people are becoming sick and tired of it.” He added that complying with the Commission’s demands would place a greater burden on the British taxpayer, necessitating more funding for the social security system.
