Mahmoud Jibril (shown), the number two in Libya's Transitional National Council, gives a press conference in Doha, Qatar, August 23, 2011, hours after Libyan fighters overran Muammar Gaddafi's fortified Bab al-Azizyah headquarters in the capital, Tripoli.

A senior Libyan opposition official says the political transition in Libya will begin promptly, as Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s regime is on the verge of total collapse.

Mahmoud Jibril, spokesman for Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC), said on Wednesday that the body’s focus is on a peaceful transition to democracy in the country, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Libya’s political transition “begins immediately,” Jibril said, adding that, “This is the new Libya where every Libyan works as a beloved brother, hand in hand, to serve the interests of the nation to ensure equality and justice for everyone.”

The Libyan opposition fighters swept into the heart of the capital Tripoli early Monday and seized control of much of the city without facing significant resistance from forces loyal to Gaddafi.

The TNC has now been recognized as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people by the United States and key European, Arab, as well as some African countries.

On Monday, European Union officials said the bloc could offer economic assistance and humanitarian aid to the new transitional government of Libya while funds could also be allocated towards preserving security and preparing for elections in the restive country.

Critics, however, accuse the West of hypocrisy over its actions in Libya, along with its silence towards the brutal crackdowns on similar anti-regime movements elsewhere in the Arab world, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

Experts say the main motive behind Western measures in Libya is to gain a share in the vast oil reserves of the North African country.

The US and its European allies unleashed a punishing, UN-mandated offensive against Gaddafi in an alleged attempt to “protect the Libyan population.”
