Amid the soaring tuition fees burdening British students, a new controversy has erupted, revealing that over £250 million of British taxpayers’ money is allocated annually to fund university education for students from other EU countries.
This revelation has stirred public outcry, especially as domestic students are warned of graduating with substantial debts due to the impending tripling of tuition fees to alleviate the financial strain on colleges. The draft government plans, if enacted, would extend state funding for impoverished students at English universities to all EU citizens, potentially channeling even more money toward European students.
Critics argue that any proposed discounts or fee waivers, introduced to mitigate the impact of higher fees on British students, must be equally applicable to EU students. This prospect has intensified the dissatisfaction among British taxpayers and politicians, with concerns raised about the UK’s financial contributions to the EU already being substantial.
Senior Conservative MP Philip Davies expressed his discontent, stating, “Given that we already subsidise the EU to the tune of billions of pounds a year, it’s a bit sickening that we then have to subsidise on top of that all the European students who come to study here.”
Michael Heaver, Youth Chairman of the UK Independence Party, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to prioritize the education of British students over subsidizing EU students. He questioned whether the UK government was prioritizing diversity at the expense of its own citizens, emphasizing the imperative to enhance the country’s skills base.
In the last academic year, over 64,000 students from other EU countries enrolled in higher education institutions in England and Wales. With an average government funding of £4,000 per student, critics estimate that over £250 million of public grant money in England and Wales alone could be directed towards supporting the education of EU students.
While EU undergraduates have access to British state-backed loans for tuition fees, UK politicians face pressure to resist further subsidizing EU students. However, the challenge lies in the binding Brussels rules mandating equal treatment for EU citizens, making it difficult to overturn existing arrangements.
Amid these debates, the Scottish government has announced plans to protest in Brussels against European laws requiring it to cover the tuition fees and teaching subsidies for EU students attending Scottish universities. This longstanding loophole, allowing EU students the same benefits as Scottish students, is deemed untenable by Scottish Education Secretary Mike Russell, who asserts that Scottish universities should not become a cost-effective alternative for students from other EU countries.

Patrick what are you talking about. Enemies of the Christians?!, I think you will find England is one of the most Christian nations in Europe. You seem to have a very warped perception. “Englands Lucifer created empire led by Ashkenazi-Khazars” typical American, sensational, conspiracy theorist talk.
As for the EU, I am very glad we dont submit to the demands of the beaurocratic fat cats in Brussels. Look at the mess that is present in the EU at moment, with Greece defaulting on its debts. Everyone who shares the Euro currency will suffer from this due to their incompetence. Howver our pound has still remained stronger than the dollar or Euro, this is not a coincidence, its relates to our economies strenght as a whole. I believe this to be part of our crucial choice to exclude ourselves from Euopean beaurocracy.
In regards to this article why should our tax money, go towards foreign students who have never ever paid a penny into the system. Whilst many people here cannot afford to go on to higher education.
What England has always done is to stupid for me to even talk about.
They are always the enemies of Europeans and Christians.
Ask the IRA or IRB or IRI, the Americans at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Scots or Indian or French or German Freedom Fighters of old.
Europe cannot be free until Englands Lucifer created empire led by Ashkenazi-Khazars is put to rest and hunamnity is freed!
Welcome to the United States guys, it’s how we do it here. A lot of free rides come to people to migrate, legally or illegally, from other countries.
