Young black males around the country are graduating at much slower rates than their white counterparts, according to a national educational study released Tuesday.
The graduation rates for black males in Oakland mirrors the national numbers in this report. But this is a problem Oakland educators are working diligently to solve.
There is a crisis in Oakland schools. The graduation rate for black students is just shy of 50 percent and for other races it is 70 percent.
Why black students in this largely African-American city aren’t graduating at the same pace is one of the problems principals are trying in vain to find solutions to during summer meetings held even before students head back to school.
They now have a goal.
“We are saying in the next four years, we have to double the graduation rate of African-American males,” Superintendent of Schools Tony Smith said.
A new study by the Massachusetts-based Schott Foundation found that Oakland is hardly alone. The report concluded that schools around the country are “systemically failing black males.”
Nationally, the graduation rate for black male high school students is just 47 percent. In California, the numbers are only slightly better — a 54 percent graduation rate for African-American males — 78 percent for whites.
Black males in New York City and Philadelphia school districts fared among the worst, with a 28 percent graduation rate. They did the best in New Jersey.
Experts say money and a historic lack of it in urban districts is to blame.
“Most import is the overarching inequality of distribution of educational resources in this country,” UC Berkeley African American Studies professor Na’ilah Nasir, Ph.D. said.
The report also says black males are punished more and given less opportunities in class than their white peers.
Oakland educators say it is possible to make a lasting change. Principal Brandi Patterson, whose own mother had a fifth grade education, says she’s living proof that teachers can and do make a difference.
“You have such a great opportunity to impact the students in ways that you will never see, and it lasts a lifetime,” she said.
Some educators and the expert ABC7 spoke to also blame what they view as failed educational programs at the federal level, including the No Child Left Behind Act. The emphasis on test scores, they say, has set many African-American boys up for failure.

African American are the finest group of people in USA. African Americans Hispanics,Asians,Whites,all these groups have high school drop-outs. Big reason is US Government has neglected education for so long that even those who pass they do not know much. The level of education is so low that students from other countries find it so easy to pass any exam here and do well. Government will never raise the level here. They don’t want people to understand and be aware of what government is doing and start questioning them. African Americans are strong reacting population and they vote. If they start understanding government lies and deceptions they will bring down the government. The educational institutions of America have not been designed to educate African Americans. It is a known fact that our community has been Mis-Educated, for a particular purpose. We as Black people must take charge of our own education, and our own institutions of learning. As long as Black people continue to wait on White society to educate their children, they will be waiting for a long time.” We must take control of the education of our children and the institutions that are created for that purpose. You are right about some things as we should call our selves after who we really are which is Hebrew. The children of Ysrael who had twelve sons. But our people will not come together and pull themselves up by the boot strings because you are living under a curse.
Not everyone who is called African American is Hebrew because we came over with our brothers and other African people on ships. Not only that but we were also scattered to the four corners of the earth therefore we can be found in every nation.

You should know in your heart your true identity instead of living in denial of the fact that the world is spinning faster, days are shorter, seasons are all out of wack because of the transgressions of our people which are called by many bi-words (nigger, african american, colored, black american, negro, nigga, nigglets, coon, spook, jiggaboo, ape, gorilla, cotton picker, watermellon eater, chicken lova, desert nigger, oreo, black bitch).
Oh yea Obama is not a Hebrew but his wife most likely is. This is not a race issue because the original Egyptians were as dark as any African American person and they abhorred the children of Ysrael regardless of their skin tone. Also how are you going to set up a kingdom over here in America when the average caucasion believe that they are the lost tribes of Israel and the United States is their promise land which is why they look down to you (not every so called white person)but never will tell you the why.

African american men first need to value family.They break family easily and poor mothers are left with children.She has to work cook feed maintain house and on top of it teach children all this is not easy.African american men are responsible of this.Remember they did a million men march to Washington DC and pledged that they will go back and locate/search/find their children and take care of them.All that march for this common sense which everybody in the world understands.So the solution: 1.Failing student must bring his FATHER to the school and principal should take action against his father for not helping his child. 2. Teachers should be held responsible for poor performing students monthly progressive report should inform parents about his performance and work towards improving it not just allowing him to fail. I have seen one kid having difficulties understanding calculus no body was willing to help him then I showed him the way and people who could help him pass today I am like his father figure and I am sure this kid will do very well in life. Boys’ underachievement is well known throughout the western world. We should not be concerned about the sons of businessmen, for they have always done well. But at the other end, manufacturing is in decline in North America. Auto workers are depressed and at risk of long-term unemployment in many countries from USA to the European Union,Canada and Australia. The same goes for steelworks and textiles. The sons of these working class men are at great risk of a lifetime of low achievement. And thus we are looking at whole populations doomed to low life expectations, unemployment, homelessness and jail. We need to address these problems. Too often, academics, especially extreme feminists, want to deny them. Look at your own country and see if these problems obtain
