Despite the refusal of the Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, to release any DNA results which might indicate the racial ancestry of Pharaoh Tutankhamen, the leaked results reveal that King Tut’s DNA is a 99.6 percent match with Western European Y chromosomes.
The DNA test results were inadvertently revealed on a Discovery Channel TV documentary filmed with Hawass’s permission — but it seems as if the Egyptian failed to spot the giveaway part of the documentary which revealed the test results.
Hawass previously announced that he would not release the racial DNA results of Egyptian mummies — obviously because he feared the consequences of such a revelation.
On the Discovery Channel broadcast, which can be seen on the Discovery Channel website here, or if they pull it, on YouTube here, at approximately 1:53 into the video, the camera pans over a printout of DNA test results from King Tut.
Firstly, here is a brief explanation of the results visible in the video. It is a list of what is called Short Tandem Repeats (STRs).
STRs are repeated DNA sequences which are “short repeat units” whose characteristics make them especially suitable for human identification.
These STR values for 17 markers visible in the video are as follows:

What does this mean? Fortunately, a genius by the name of Whit Athey provides the key to this list. Mr Athey is a retired physicist whose working career was primarily at the Food and Drug Administration where he was chief of one of the medical device labs.
Mr Athey received his doctorate in physics and biochemistry at Tufts University, and undergraduate (engineering) and masters (math) degrees at Auburn University. For several years during the 1980s, he also taught one course each semester in the electrical engineering department of the University of Maryland. Besides his interest in genetic genealogy, he is an amateur astronomer and has his own small observatory near his home in Brookeville, MD.
He also runs a very valuable website called the “Haplogroup Predictor” which allows users to input STR data and generate the haplogroup which marks those STR data.
For those who want to know what a haplogroup is, here is a “simple” definition: a haplogroup is a group of similar haplotypes that share a common ancestor with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutation.
Still none the wiser? Damn these scientists.
Ok, let’s try it this way: a haplotype is a combination of multiple specific locations of a gene or DNA sequence on a chromosome.
Haplogroups are assigned letters of the alphabet, and refinements consist of additional number and letter combinations, for example R1b or R1b1. Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA haplogroups have different haplogroup designations. In essence, haplogroups give an inisight into ancestral origins dating back thousands of years.
By entering all the STR data inadvertently shown on the Discovery video, a 99.6 percent fit with the R1b haplogroup is revealed.
The significance is, of course, that R1b is the most common Y-chromosome haplogroup in Europe reaching its highest concentrations in Ireland, Scotland, western England and the European Atlantic seaboard — in other words, European through and through.
So much for the Afro-centrists and others who have derided the very obvious northwestern European appearance of a large number of the pharonic mummies. It seems like March of the Titans was right after all…

Actually, this may be true. If you look at the Irish chronicles (Labor Gabala), which date from 500AD, they say that King Tut’s wife (and Pharaoh Aye) were exiled from Egypt. They then sailed to Spain and onwards to Ireland – and that these were the first people to settle Ireland.

I have actually worked on Discovery shows before, and here is the problem with this entire argument – you are assuming that everything shown on screen is 100% legit. It is quite possible that the closeups of the printout were filmed by a “B” or second camera operator of a totally unrelated or made-up document. We have gotten so used to pausing episodes of Lost and the like and looking at all of the details in each shot that we assume that all shows (esp. documentaries) are full of truth. In reality, there are a lot of cost cutting measures performed in these types of shows

No one ever took seriously the claim that Egyptians were black. I think we all figured that they were, like most inhabitants of the Mediterranean, more brown than anything. Black Africans are mostly Sub-Saharan. Egypt is more a part of the Middle East than anything. Even modern day Egyptians are not black. Just because it’s Africa, that doesn’t mean it’s inhabited by black people. That has NEVER been the case with Egypt.
You have to consider trade routes. These people were largely sea-faring, from what I understand. Sea travel is almost easier than land travel. What intrigues me about the map showing the distribution of the relevent haplotype which suggests a western European ancestry for Tutankahmen is that the highest concentration is in the western fringe, areas once inhabited by Celtic-speaking peoples, and where their descendants are still to be found. In Tutankhamen’s day, this distribution would have been wider to the eastward, matching the westward movement of these tribes.
There is a tribe in Uganda called the Karamajong which retain a surprising number of words for various artifacts and aspects of their previous cattle-raising lifestyle, words which have been shown to resemble closely Scottish Gaelic words for similar items. They also until recently had a number of artifacts which are related to ancient Egyptian ones.

I disagree. The males are depicted as red-skinned, like sunburned, but the females are white, or light light brown. My husband is what you would consider “black” and he has red hair… you do know that races intermix, right? And sometimes people can have red hair that is not “accompanied with light skin, freckles, and blue or green eyes.” For example, my husband’s mom is scandanavian, and his dad is African-American. My husband is a caramel-colored black guy with red hair and lots of freckles. I’m 1/2 Filipino and 1/2 Italian. But, I definitely look Filipino, while anyone who didn’t know my father would never guess I was 1/2 white. So, while my and my husband’s children will almost certainly not look “white,” the will certainly have some haplotypes in their DNA which indicates white ancestry.

Good, quick analysis. Remember, there are a lot of tribes that swept back and forth across Europe, Northern Africa, and Asia, leading to some interesting results. As you have pointed out, the Vedda and some Caucasians interbred. Additionally, if I recall rightly, Turkomen are more closely related to Mongols than they are to other Arab-area groups by genotype, indicating that, at some point, the Mongols swept through the area (which they did; several times). Amerindians are more closely related to the Mongols than to other Old World genotypes. And an interesting one, the dark-skinned Aboriginals of Australia, despite their phenotype, are more closely related to the Vietnamese than they are to Africans who they more closely resemble. It’s just how genetics goes, and that’s that. What the study does not answer is when that Y chromosome entered the lineage. It probably wasn’t his paternal grandmother, and for all we can speculate, it could have been ten or fifteen generations earlier — chromosomes have a way of sticking around for a long time in lineages without substantial changes. If the scientific community wants to answer that question, they will analyze the earlier members of the lineage, and look at other somatic and mitochrondrial chromosomes from Tut.
Butcher Joe: DNA analysis is not “what it is”, not when the subject under investigation is the descendant of a family which has been deliberately inbreeding for generations. Tutankhamen was the son of a brother and sister, who were themselves the offspring of a brother and sister marriage, and so on back into centuries of Pharaonic tradition. This kind of inbreeding breaks most of the assumptions on which DNA analysis is based.
Secondly, you cannot appeal to the appearance of mummies to support theories about skin color or appearance. The mummification process includes dying of the skin, and the application of oils and resins which change its color and texture.
Third, don’t try to drag Ramses the Great into this: he and his father and grandfather not only lived long AFTER Tut, but were not even related. Ramses was the grandson of a general who simply took the throne. Neither his mother nor his grandmother were related by blood to their husbands. His red hair indicates nothing about the dynasties that came before him, as there is no genetic connection.
Finally — who cares? The Egyptians were the least racist people on earth. Their Pharaohs, like their population, were white, black, brown, and any other color you like. They did not care about skin color. They cared about bloodlines, about religion, about the culture one came from–they were quite culture-centric in that regard–but the one thing they did not care about was skin color. So why on earth should we?

Take this as another example of people intermixing with others – period. We do it now, so why is this such a big deal?
