Samantha Tomasini and Patrick Fousek, found under the influence of drugs, attempted to sell their baby daughter outside a supermarket in Salinas, California, for £17. The couple approached two women leaving the shop, initially dismissing it as a joke. However, Fousek insisted on selling the child, attempting to thrust her into their arms. Upon mentioning the police, Fousek rushed to a nearby car, and the couple fled before law enforcement arrived.

The vigilant women managed to note the car’s registration number, aiding the police in tracing the couple to an apartment block. There, authorities found Tomasini, 20, and Fousek, 38, intoxicated on crystal meth, a dangerous form of amphetamine, with the baby living in squalor. Tomasini later admitted to breastfeeding the child while under the influence of drugs.

Both parents were charged with child endangerment, attempting to abandon a child, and being intoxicated on drugs. Fousek faced an additional charge of violating parole stemming from a 2006 arrest for running a crystal meth lab with his twin brother.

During the initial encounter outside the Walmart store, Fousek had asked to borrow a mobile phone from the women. Subsequently, he struck up a conversation and, shockingly, offered to sell his daughter for £17. Despite their initial disbelief, the women quickly realized the seriousness of the situation, and one of them promptly called the police.

The couple was set to make their first court appearance with appointed lawyers. Law enforcement praised the women for their swift thinking and assistance in providing crucial information.
