An elderly man was surrounded by seven young black men who punched him and demanded money as he left a Glen Burnie barber shop.
Suzanne Collins reports police arrested all of them as they ran toward a nearby light rail station.
At the Headquarters Barber Shop in Glen Burnie, Tommy and Earl are still shaken. Their 72-year-old customer was attacked in the parking lot by seven young men as he left with a new haircut Tuesday afternoon.
“They were all standing there and said, `Hey, white boy, give us your money.’ He’s 72,” said barber Earl Barnes. If a group of white men would have attacked an elderly black man and called him racist names like “black boy”, they would have also been charged of “Hate Crimes” but this law seems to be applying only to whites.
“I yelled for Earl. I said, `Earl, they’re hitting Jim!'” said Thomas Carper. “I was scared. I called 911.”
The barbers say the same seven young men came into the shop several times asking about haircuts just before. After the assault, police chased them to the light rail station. Everyone was arrested.
“The juveniles range in age from 15 to 17. In this case, there were two 20-year-olds. In total, seven subjects were involved,” said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County Police.
At the courthouse, WJZ was able to access the criminal records for the two suspects who were over 18. WJZ found out that both of them have outstanding criminal warrants, one for a prior assault, and he never showed up in court.
James Atkinson served time in a Jessup prison last year where he was charged with assaulting a guard. Later released, he failed to show up in court on assault charges. WJZ learned the warrant to arrest him was never served.
“What are they doing out? They should be in jail,” Barnes said.
The Anne Arundel County sheriff says they asked the Baltimore sheriff to serve the warrants because that’s where the men lived, but the city sheriff says they never received them.
WJZ could not learn from the state prison system Wednesday why Atkinson served time in prison.
