A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in a car near a police station in Russia’s southern Dagestan region, killing two officers.
The bomber blew up in a hijacked Lada Priora car upon entry into Dagestan’s Kazbek region, the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office said on its website today. Five police officers and 12 civilians were injured in the attack.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called for a “brutal” response to terrorism after dual suicide bombings in Moscow subway stations killed 40 people during the morning rush hour on March 29. The Moscow attacks were followed by explosions in Dagestan and neighboring Ingushetia just days after.
Ingushetia and Dagestan both border Chechnya, where Russian forces have fought two wars against separatists since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The North Caucasus region is plagued by an Islamist insurgency, the country’s highest unemployment rates and rampant corruption.
