A colossal red granite head of one of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs has been unearthed in the southern city of Luxor, officials said.
The 3,000-year-old head of Amenhotep III – grandfather of Tutankhamun – was dug out of the ruins of the pharaoh’s mortuary temple.
Experts say it is the best preserved example of the king’s face ever found.
The 2.5m (8ft) head is part of a larger statue, most of which was found several years ago.
Antiquities officials say the statue is to be reconstructed.
“Other statues have always had something broken – the tip of the nose, or the face is eroded,” said Dr Hourig Sourouzian, who has led the Egyptian-European expedition at the site.
“But here, from the top of the crown to the chin, it is so beautifully carved and polished, nothing is broken.”
Vast empire
Egypt’s antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, described it as “a masterpiece of highly artistic quality”.
Amenhotep III ruled Egypt from about 1387 to 1348 BC and presided over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.
Scientists using DNA tests and CT scans on several mummies have identified him as the grandfather of Tutankhamun – the boy-king born of an incestuous marriage between Akhenaten and his sister, both the offspring of Amenhotep III.
The massive mortuary temple in Luxor was largely destroyed, possibly by floods, and little remains of its walls.

I think more tests definately need to be done. If you look at the first three dynasties in ancient Egypt you can see the pharoes quite clearly had typical negroid features.
For those of you who say the DNA results are in and they prove King Tut had features similar to Europeans or people from the middle east then you clearly don’t understand genetics at all as do most people who haven’t studied genetics. In fact the DNA evidence, according to a friend of mine who has a PHD (doctorate) in genetics, does not confirm his race at all. To be honest I can’t comment much on this subject because I’m no expert in this field but I doubt very much that most of the comments on this article come from geneticists. Also I have very little faith in the tests carried out by the Egyptians, it would seem they have an interest in trying to manipulate the data to show themselves as the descendants of ancient Egypt. I’m not saying all Egyptians are corrupt but I certainly don’t trust Dr Zahi Hawass.
Finally I don’t think this issue matters a great deal as this was all in the past and more important issues are here in the present. I think, however, it is important for black people to know that their entire history is not that they were just slaves taken by superior white people as alot of western education teaches us. There were many ancient African civilisations and cultural discoveries of sophisticated society, art, speech, science, etc. Sure some africans lived in huts or caves just as europeans, asians, middle-easterns and everyone else did. Don’t believe a lie just because it sounds convincing or someone tries to undermine another viewpoint and claims what they’re saying is fact. Look into these things for yourself and you will discover that the same person who gives you the definitive answers that the ancient egyptians were white have holes in their arguments.

Oh, the update for King Tut is that Hawass has given to go-ahead to test him for sickle cell disease as a cause of death. Now, before folks try to say that sickle cell disease is not indicative of African ancestry, be clear that the only two types that are not of African ancestry is the Saudi-Asia. Of the four types, the one that is fatal, i.e., causes death is the Hsb type of Benin, clearly African. Hawass was asked whether it was possible that King Tut died of sickle cell and he answered that it was possible. In other words, the particular fatal type of African ancestry is inherited from both parents, therefore both parents would have to be African.
I have googled this and the German scientists claim this test could be done in one hour….so why has it not been done? Partly, because it would be a finality…that is he Hawass has already stated the death by sickle disease was possible so he has already admitted to the African ancestry of the Boy King!

I highly doubt King Tut is the European M269, that’s simply hilarious, he’s more likely one of the various African R1b of Central-West Africa. It seems to me the genetic tests are skewed to make Europeans feel better by putting Europe’s evolution before Asia, i.e. Eurasia, when it should be Asiatic-European. Afro-Asiatic is correct when active outside of Africa, but trying to make R1a1 M-173 Eurasian defies that the trip had from Africa to Asia to Europe, etc. and never Europe to Asia to Africa as if following a clearly defined evolutionary road from continent to continent without any climatic consequences forcing geographical deviations from the often repeated migration pattern back to Africa.
So, even if King Tut were R1b*, R1b1*, the SRY for either Asiatic-Europe (Eurasia) or Afro-Asiatic would need to be provided to end the debate of his Y-DNA lineage. Way too many labs give out the common R*, R1*, R1a*, R1b* as being specifically Eurasian while neglecting to tell the other end of the spectrum that in interior Africa at Cameroon no Europeans were present to have made the contribution because the derivations are specifically not-European. If the genetic back mutation is R1b* then it still remains Afro-Asiatic derived and not Euro-Asiatic.
Also, folks need to remember that the so-called ancient Egyptians chose a self-identification with the genetics of the Mother, which was how the rule of inheritance was determined, i.e., maternally verses the Asiatic’s paternal lineage recognition.

Many modern populations of northern Cameroon speak Chadic languages, which are classified as an ancient branch of the Afro-Asiatic superfamily of languages; the now extinct language of the Ancient Egyptians also belonged to the same superfamily. Individuals whose Y-chromosomes possess all the mutations on internal nodes of the Y-DNA tree down to and including M207 (which defines Haplogroup R) but which display neither the M173 mutation that defines Haplogroup R1 nor the M124 mutation that defines Haplogroup R2 are categorised as belonging to group R*. Some instances of Haplogroup R* have been reported from samples of Australian aboriginal populations.
My brother has been classed as R1a1 M-173-derived but not the presence of R1a (SRY1532) or R1b (M343). Logically then R1a1 M-173-derived without that presence would be strictly Afro-Asiatic if the difference is split at Euro-Asiatic (Erasian) SRY1532 and R1b M343. His mtDNA is L3e, regionally Central-South East Africa. For the sake of argument what makes more sense, i.e., that his Y-DNA R1a M-173 is as much Afro-Asiatic as his mtDNA L3e as Afro-Asiatic. The point of origin is Africa into Asia and back to Africa if by mutation or back migration as we read often. In cases of the common R* too many African-Americans are being told their MRCA is an European or in my brother’s case of deep viking roots by way of Briton ! This in fact skews the facts and gives the impression that the European was consensually sleeping with or raping African women some 4,5600 years ago. Now that is just stupid on its face. Rather than admit the split is Africa to Asia to Europe the just cut Africa out and put Europe ahead of Asia which again is geographically wrong with regard to migration out of Africa.
It seems to me the genetic tests are skewed to make Europeans feel better by putting Europe’s evolution before Asia, i.e. Eurasia, when it should be Asiatic-European. Afro-Asiatic is correct when active outside of Africa, but trying to make R1a1 M-173 Eurasian defies that the trip had from Africa to Asia to Europe, etc. and never Europe to Asia to Africa as if following a clearly defined evolutionary road from continent to continent without any climatic consequences forcing geographical deviations from the often repeated migration pattern back to Africa.
So, even if King Tut were R1b*, R1b1*, the SRY for either Asiatic-Europe (Eurasia) or Afro-Asiatic would need to be provided to end the debate of his Y-DNA lineage. Way too many labs give out the common R*, R1*, R1a*, R1b* as being specifically Eurasian while neglecting to tell the other end of the spectrum that in interior Africa at Cameroon no Europeans were present to have made the contribution because the derivations are specifically not-European. If the genetic back mutation is R1b* then it still remains Afro-Asiatic derived and not Euro-Asiatic.
Also, folks need to remember that the so-called ancient Egyptians chose a self-identification with the genetics of the Mother, which was how the rule of inheritance was determined, i.e., maternally verses the Asiatic’s paternal lineage recognition.
