The British woman at the centre of the Dubai kissing case protested her innocence yesterday and claimed that she had ‘been caught up in a huge misunderstanding’.
Charlotte Adams, 25, was on holiday there when she was spotted kissing Arab man Ayman Najafi, a 24-year-old British marketing executive.
The pair were given a one-month jail sentence after being convicted of indecency and illegal drinking.
Yesterday, Miss Adams, an estate agent from north London, spoke of
the difficulties she has faced since her arrest last November.
‘I have been living with this for the past four months,’ she said. ‘It’s now a shock that it has become public.’
Miss Adams has been stranded in Dubai, which is part of the United Arab Emirates, since her arrest because police confiscated her passport. The blonde estate agent and Arab Mr Najafi, who works in Dubai, were arrested at a burger restaurant at the popular Jumeirah Beach Residence after a 38-year- old local woman claimed she spotted them kissing on the lips and stroking each others backs.
Both are adamant that the woman was mistaken and claim that they only shared a ‘peck on the cheek’. Miss Adams was brought up in Essex and attended a boarding school in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. Her flatmate, Jade Christa Williams, who is acting as her spokesman, said: ‘Charlotte is not at all disrespectful of Dubai’s laws and fully understands their culture. She has just unfortunately been caught up in a huge misunderstanding. Charlotte is completely innocent.’
Miss Adams and Mr Najafi, of Palmers Green, north London, appeared in court on Sunday to appeal against their jail sentence. The verdict on their appeal will be delivered on April 4.
Ayman Najafi, right, was having dinner with friends and Miss Adams when the alleged incident is said to have taken place
