An Israeli minister tonight insisted the assassination of a high-ranking member of Hamas should not be considered as murder.
Yuli Edelstein, speaking on a visit to the House of Commons, said no-one should become ‘overly emotional’ about the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, which has been widely blamed on the Israeli secret service, Mossad.
His remarks came as it emerged that two more counterfeit British passports may have been used in the plot to kill al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room last month.
Foreign Office minister Chris Bryant said they came on top of the apparent use of six passports by a hit squad , which is being investigated by the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
Israel’s public diplomacy minister Mr Edelstein, speaking to a think tank in Westminster, insisted that he did not know who carried out the assassination of al-Mabhouh.
But he added: ‘Even if it will turn out that the worst secret service of the worst country in the world had managed to get to that guy, I will still not call it murder.
‘We are talking about the worst murderer in one of the worst terrorist organisations, so let’s not get overly emotional about his death and let’s not start mourning his death.’
It is understood that the killers tried to make al-Mabhouh’s death look like an accident by electrocuting him with a bedside lamp.
Mr Bryant, responding to an urgent question on the affair in Parliament, denied that the British authorities had had any forewarning of the attack.
He told MPs ‘new facts continue to emerge’ about the killing.
Mr Bryant said authorities had learned on January 31 that European passports had been used by the killers.
On February 12, they were informed that UK passports ‘might’ have been involved and this was confirmed three days later in relation to the six passports already under investigation.
Today Emirati foreign minister Abdulla Bin Zayed told Foreign Secretary David Miliband about the further passports which may have been linked to the killing.
Mr Bryant said it was ‘crystal clear’ that ‘no part of the British Government, either minister or official, had any foreknowledge of al-Mabhouh’s killing or the use of British passports in it or of any clandestine operation being planned.
‘To suggest otherwise is to make an irresponsible allegation without any basis in fact,’ he said.
Shadow foreign secretary William Hague said: ‘We are agreed that the misuse of British passports is a grave matter that must be prevented.’
He called for ‘assurances from Israel as a friendly nation that it will not sanction for whatever reason, including in any intelligence operation, the misuse of British passports’.
