US Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr.

Today, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) introduced a resolution that recognizes the importance of Christmas.

“This holiday season, I am perplexed by the mounting discussion surrounding the ‘proper’ way to commemorate December 25th. Why are we hard-pressed to say ‘Season’s Greetings’ or ‘Happy Holidays’ yet, urged to avoid pronouncing the Christmas holiday and steered away from wishing others ‘Merry Christmas’?

I am troubled by the growing sentiment that the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’ is not appropriate and I am worried that attempts to celebrate a ‘politically correct’ holiday season may cause the loss of some of the traditions sacred to this widely celebrated holiday.

I recognize that there are many religions that celebrate a variety of holidays this month and in accordance with the First Amendment, I believe it is important to preserve the right for everyone to worship as they believe. As a Christian, I feel it is also important that I have the right to celebrate Christmas and observe its significance as a national holiday and I strongly believe that wishing someone ‘Merry Christmas’ should never be met with disapproval.

As Christmas approaches, I have introduced a resolution that recognizes the importance of Christmas symbols and traditions and also expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate this holiday. Furthermore, the resolution expresses disapproval of all attempts to ban or limit references to Christmas.

We must not forget that the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate of the birth of Christ and I will continue to work to protect the sanctity of this great holiday.”

  1. Dec. 25? The birthday of Mithra, not Jesus. New Testament Book of Luke: Angel Gabriel comes to Mary in Hebrew sixth month (October). Nine month pregnancy places birth of Christ at July/August.

  2. Thank you sir! Now for a resolution to remove the term “Political Correctness” from our vocabulary. I would suggest “Personal Weakness” as a replacement or “Political Coersion” or just “Propaganda”..
