A couple leaving their home in Shreveport’s Pinecroft subdivision found “KILL WHITEY” written in spray paint on their driveway Wednesday evening.
“It’s not vandalism; it’s flat out racism or a threat,” Clifton Hair said Thursday afternoon, pointing at the letters about a foot tall outside the gate at his residence in the 2100 block of McCutcheon Avenue.
“Why? What did we do? Just because we’re white?” the 69-year-old asked. “I can’t conceivably think of anything I could have done to offend anybody of any color to have this happen.”
Hair reported the incident to Shreveport police as a hate crime Thursday morning. The case is in line to be assigned to a detective in the Police Department’s special investigations office to check out Hair’s claim, Shreveport police Cpl. Bill Goodin said.
In his report, officer T.M. Lee refers to the phrase as a “threatening and racist statement” and classifies the case as simple criminal property damage. An additional penalty would be added to any criminal charge if the action is determined to be a hate crime, Goodin said.
Hair suspects the words were painted on his driveway sometime after he, his wife, and his mother-in-law went to bed at 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Hair said his four dogs, which sleep inside, usually bark when the security light on the driveway illuminates. But the dogs never barked and he never awoke Tuesday night, he said.
“The undertones of it are serious,” Hair said of the incident, adding that he plans to reposition the security light and add another at the front of his house.
Clerk fires at 2 gunmen during robbery attempt
Two gunmen tried to rob a store in the 3800 block of Linwood Avenue but the clerk opened fire, prompting them to flee. No one was wounded.
A passer-by called 911 when she saw the gunmen running into A-1 Quick Stop. After she turned around her vehicle, she saw one of them get on a SporTran bus and the other run into the neighborhood behind the store, authorities said.
Shreveport police searched the bus and the area near the store. They detained two men but later released them after determining the two are not the gunmen.
Teen wounded in thigh in shooting on Jackson
Shreveport police responding to reports of shots being fired in the 3700 block of Jackson Street about 11 p.m. Wednesday found a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to one of his thighs.
The teen told investigators he was near Hassett Street at Jewella Avenue when an unknown male fired at him.
Investigators found evidence, including a shell casing, in front of a residence the 3700 block of Jackson Street, nowhere close to where the juvenile said the shooting occurred, police spokesman Cpl. Bill Goodin said.
The teen later told police there had been a fight in front of that residence, someone dropped a gun and he was shot. Police say that doesn’t seem consistent with the injury.
Text messaging cited as factor in Caddo crash
Caddo authorities say a woman was sending a text message on her cell phone when her car crashed Monday on state Highway 538.
Shadreka Clark, 20, address unknown, was traveling west in the 7400 block of Highway 538 when her vehicle ran off the right side of the road, hit two mailboxes, crossed the highway and struck a tree, said Cindy Chadwick, spokeswoman for the Caddo sheriff’s office.
Investigators found an unfinished, unsent text message on the woman’s cell phone in her vehicle, Chadwick said.
Clark was issued a summons to appear in court on a charge of reckless operation of a vehicle. She also was cited for not wearing a seatbelt and cellular telephone use, Chadwick said.
Sheriff: DNA links man to church burglary
DNA test results link a Rodessa man to a break-in last year at a church in his hometown, Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator said.
Sylvester Reed, a 44-year-old serving time for breaking into Rodessa Town Hall, was charged Wednesday in connection with a burglary at First Antioch Baptist Church.
This is the second time DNA evidence has linked Reed to a crime scene, the sheriff said.
Reed is serving seven years for burglarizing Town Hall in 2007. Blood found at the scene later was matched to him.
And recent DNA tests match Reed to blood found on a broken window at the church, Prator said. So detectives obtained a warrant charging him with simple burglary of a religious building.
They also placed a hold on him so he will be returned to Caddo to face the new charge once he finishes his jail term.
Wounded woman faces two counts of battery
The 22-year-old Shreveport woman who was shot Tuesday after entering her neighbor’s yard during an altercation faces two counts of simple battery.
Cantisha Beaner was booked into City Jail about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on one charge as a result of the shooting. She also had an outstanding warrant, police said.
Beaner and Kareka Barfield, 26, got into a fight at Barfield’s residence in the 3000 block of Amherst Street. Barfield pulled a handgun from her pants and shot Beaner once in the left shin, police said.
Barfield is charged with one count of aggravated battery because a fist fight escalated into the use of a firearm, authorities said. She also is charged with one count of simple property damage because a bullet hit somebody’s house. Three other adults and an infant were in the residence.
Beaner was taken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport for treatment of an injury authorities said was not life-threatening. Police said Beaner was the aggressor in the situation.
