French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been jeered in Africa while attending the funeral of President Omar Bongo in Gabon. Hundreds of people, lined up for the funeral in the capital Libreville, booed the French president as made his way to the presidential palace, yelling at him to leave the country. President Bongo, who ruled the former French colony for 41 years, died last week at the age of 73.

His death has fuelled an acrimonious debate about France’s historical links with the oil-rich country. Despite its oil wealth, most people in the west African nation live in extreme poverty, with some of them partly blaming the French turning a blind eye to corruption in return for ready supplies of oil.
