The King County Prosecutor’s Office has released this photo of a man they’ve dubbed “John Doe,” who is suspected of raping a pregnant woman at Swedish Medical Center last fall.
Seattle police say that the man checked into the First Hill hospital on Oct. 31 and identified himself as “Rosario Macedo,” according to a police report. The man, who told hospital staff he was 45, homeless and had crossed into the U.S. from Mexico last summer, is accused of entering the 31-year-old woman’s room the following morning.
The woman was awakened around 7 a.m. to a stranger touching her inappropriately. She told police that she thought the man was masturbating, the police report said. When she confronted the man and screamed for help he fled in a motorized wheelchair, according to the police report.
Seattle police tried to identify the man through DNA found in blood taken from the unknown man when he checked in to the hospital, King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Carol Spoor said in court charging papers. Authorities could not identify the man in a search of state and national databases.
On May 6, Spoor filed a charge of second-degree rape against “John Doe AKA Rosario Macedo.”
Spoor, in court charging papers, said that the man used the “Rosario Macedo” name while staying at Downtown Emergency Service Center, a homeless shelter; and when purchasing an Amtrak ticket to Los Angeles after the assault. But, Spoor added, she doesn’t believe that Macedo is his real name.
A King County Superior Court judge has filed a warrant for the man’s arrest under the “John Doe” name.
Leesa Manion, chief of staff for King County Jewish Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, said that “filing under a John Doe is very rare.”
“This type of stranger attack in a hospital is very, very rare,” Manion said.
