The man accused of killing two local teens in a car crash last month has been identified as an illegal immigrant and will face deportation after facing murder charges in Madison County, jail officials said Friday.
U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on 25-year-old Felix Dominquez Ortega, who has been in jail since his arrest.
Ortega has been charged with two counts of murder, driving without a license, possession of a forged instrument and a seatbelt violation. Police said he was apparently drunk when he fled from officers April 17 and crashed his truck into another vehicle at Whitesburg Drive and Airport Road. He killed 16-year-old Leigh Anna Jimmerson of Grissom High School and 19-year-old Tad Mattle, a recent Grissom grad.
Representatives with the Mexican consulate met with Ortega last week and determined that he is a citizen of Mexico and does not have the proper documentation to be in the U.S., Lt. Bill Hancock, a supervisor at the county jail, said Friday.
If Ortega is found not guilty of all the charges, ICE has 48 hours to transfer him to a holding facility in Gadsden. Otherwise, he must be released.
“If they don’t pick him up, we can no longer legally detain him,” Hancock said, “but they’re very efficient at picking people up, especially the high-profile ones.”
If Ortega is convicted, he will serve his sentence here before appearing in front of a federal judge at a deportation hearing.
Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Roberts said Ortega was wanted at the time of crash for an outstanding warrant for driving under the influence. Officers contacted ICE shortly after Ortega’s arrest, because he provided forged identification.
It took police, jail administrators and ICE agents several weeks to determine Ortega’s citizenship because of his multiple aliases.

As for those illegals that commit major crimes there should be a mandatory legal sentence of caning as is in China. Following the process of deportation they should be taken to the nearest border crossiing and layed open to severe caning. Also, should they be again be found back in the United States, illegally, the second time. There should be a repeat caning for each following illegal entry into the United States.Our government is getting no where with their manner of deportation. The majority of those deported are right back in the United States within days of the process. Thereby, being provided the experience, of each illegal, as being some what more educated as how to avoid the U.S governments ” smack on the hands’ , new shoes, a free meal and a free bus ride back to the border. I know the current administration would never hold still for such treatment, but what of the treatment American Citizens experience when subject to incarceration in a Mexican cock roach hotel ? It far past time that the citizens of this nation stand-up for their own safety and personal well being. Catch a illegal making a dash into the United States, rope him, cane his wet behind and turn him back in the direction from where he came. If they, the illegal, wish to be part of the United States. Then have them to apply through the proper channels for citizenship. I recall, that when the Mexican Border was being manned by civilian volunteers the was a large decrease in the illegal crossings.
