Bum: "Give me that baby"

A bicycle-riding Lewisburg man is accused of trying to abduct a 1-year-old boy in front of two older children Wednesday afternoon in the city.

Raymond Tiebout, 46, of 120 N. Fifth St., Lewisburg, was arrested soon after the 12:27 p.m. incident, accused of trying to grab the child from a sidewalk in front of 420 N. Second Street in Sunbury.

The child, the son of Ronald Heller, was being placed in a van by a 13-year-old girl who told city police Tiebout approached them on a bicycle and said, “Give me that baby now” as he grabbed the child’s right arm and tried to ride away, a criminal complaint filed by city detective Chris Blase said.

The girl was able to pull the child away and ran into the house, the complaint said.

A 9-year-old boy who was nearby on the sidewalk and witnessed the alleged abduction attempt told police the same version of events.

He also heard Tiebout say, “Give me that baby now,” the complaint said.

Blase said the two older children were near tears during the interview with police and were fearful that Tiebout would try and abduct them as well.

Tiebout was arrested in the parking lot of the Brass Key and identified by the two young witnesses.

Questioned by police, Tiebout allegedly admitted grabbing the boy by the arm but said he was just trying to get him out of the rain.

A former Sunbury resident for six years before moving to Lewisburg four months ago, Tiebout said he didn’t know the child or the witnesses.

Sitting in the District Judge Robert J. Bolton’s courtroom a few hours later, Tiebout denied he was trying to kidnap a child as he drove a 10-speed bicycle with a load of aluminum under his arm that he’d picked up from a junk yard.

“I get arrested for just talking to people,” he said, describing his comments as playful and not menacing. “I said ‘Hello lady, give me the baby.’ I wasn’t trying to take the baby.”

Besides, he added, “I have four grandchildren.”

As Bolton read the charges and described the alleged abduction, Tiebout vigorously shook his head.

“But it’s not true,” he said aloud, causing the judge to admonish him to keep quiet.
