Southwest’s decision to paint one of its planes with a photo of a beautiful swimsuit Jewish model whose name is Bar Refaeli is turning off at least some of its customers. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote about the story Friday, saying “some passengers complain that they’re being forced to board an aircraft plastered with soft porn.” But the story, like the swimsuit model on the plane, appears to have some legs to it. One of the latest newspapers to pick the story is The Courier-Mail of Brisbane, Australia, a country that’s thousands of miles away from the nearest Southwest destination. That newspaper’s (somewhat dramatic) headline: “Passenger anger over ‘porno plane.’ ”
The Courier-Mail says Southwest “has received a flood of criticism on its corporate blog about the promotion, with many passengers complaining about having to board an aircraft ‘covered in pornography. ‘ ” The Star-Telegram adds some customers feel the image adds an adults-only vibe that some passengers, especially those with children, may prefer to avoid. “Many women do not enjoy having their husbands exposed to explicit pictures or explaining to young children why the lady on the plane is ‘showing her boobies, ‘ ” Texas customers Chris and Sharon Kraemer say in a letter to Southwest that’s quoted by the Star-Telegram.
Among other reactions, the Star-Telegram found this comment posted by a reader on Southwest’s corporate blog: “Does anyone else find this kind of trashy for Southwest? Having a woman in a bikini on the side of the plane hardly seems like the epitome of the friendly, down-home airline I’ve grown accustomed to.” Ironically, of course, one of the things Southwest is most-remembered for throughout its 30-year history has been irreverent marketing, which included some flight attendants wearing hot pants and go-go boots during the 70s.
As for the latest flap, Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King acknowledges the airline has received negative feedback. But, she says those opposed account for only about 25% of feedback on the subject. “As with anything that’s different and unique, you do hear from some people who disagree,” King tells the Star-Telegram. She adds the company gave careful consideration to make sure the Sports Illustrated cover model’s image “was in good taste before we put it up on the aircraft.”
