Lady Renouf said Bishop Williamson was not a Holocaust denier but, like her, interested in questioning the Jewish genocide and “rigorously testing history”. “The very idea that he has to recant his views is not Christianity; it is what I call Holocaustianity,” she said.
But Lady Renouf’s support for the controversial bishop and her outspoken views on Judaism were condemned by Jewish leaders in Australia.
“Lady Renouf’s comments have nothing to do with an objective pursuit of knowledge,” said the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive, Vic Alhadeff. “Her views are deeply offensive, and firmly anchored in ignorance and prejudice.”
Mr Alhadeff said Lady Renouf’s views were only given prominence because of her title and position. “[Bishop Williamson’s] vilification of the Jewish people is repugnant to any fair-minded person, and he has been disowned and repudiated by his own church,” he said.
