A psychiatrist has given a glimpse into the warped mind of the father who was “born to rape” the daughter he held captive for 24 years.
Josef Fritzl, 73, lured teenager Elisabeth into a sound-proofed cellar under their home in Amstetten, Austria, in 1984.
Now 42, the daughter has told of how her father repeatedly raped her in the confined, stuffy bunker where she gave birth to seven of his children.
“The stronger your opponent, the bigger the victory. That may very well have been the reason.” Fritzl explaining why he picked Elisabeth to be his victim
Adelheid Kastner, who put together a psychological profile for Fritzl’s trial in Sankt Poelten, west of Vienna, said the Austrian was able to block out his obscene crimes.
“On the surface, everything functions smoothly. But deep down, his unfulfilled needs are simmering,” Mr Kastner said.
“He is aware – he says so himself – that he has an evil side. He is aware that he was born to rape.
“He has that partly under control. But as soon as he loosens his grip, everything erupts out.”
The rapist had previously testified that he had a difficult childhood and a bad relationship with his mother and that he was regularly beaten.
“The climate in his parent’s house was marked by fear,” Ms Kastner said.
Ms Kastner told how she had asked why Fritzl chose Elisabeth to be his victim, out of the seven children he fathered with his wife Rosemarie.
“He replied, ‘because she (Elisabeth) was most like me. She was as stubborn me, as strong as me. The stronger your opponent, the bigger the victory. That may very well have been the reason’.”
Fritzl felt that “the more children Elisabeth had, the closer she became to me’, Ms Kastner said.
“If she has a lot of children, that will make her unattractive to other men,” he told the psychiatrist.
But Ms Kastener said Fritzl always knew what he was doing was wrong.
“There are two worlds for him, upstairs and downstairs. And when Fritzl closed the cellar door, he didn’t think about it.
“But every night when he went to bed, he realised he was doing something wrong. He realised it was not right.”
A baby boy died soon after birth and Fritzl disposed of his body in an incinerator. He expressed regret that he did not get medical help for the ailing infant.
“I don’t know why I didn’t help. I just overlooked it. I thought the little one would survive,” he said.
