Nestled in the impoverished capital, Praia, this advice center mirrors a similar facility inaugurated in the arid African state of Mali in October. The EU’s controversial plan seeks to facilitate legal employment opportunities for Africans in Europe, with the Cape Verde center serving as a pilot scheme for potential replication across Africa and Eastern Europe.
The center’s mandate includes disseminating information on job prospects within EU states, including Britain, and offering training and support for prospective migrants. While EU officials applaud the initiative, its timing has come under scrutiny, particularly amidst economic uncertainty leading to job losses in the tens of thousands across Britain and other EU nations.
Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), questioned the rationale behind establishing job centers in Africa, expressing concern about the EU’s focus on migration while the UK faces projections of 400,000 job losses in the next six months.
