A Spartanburg woman who police said tried to frame a local contractor by having someone paint “KKK” and racial slurs on her front door was arrested Monday on charges including conspiracy.
Police said Robin Rankins-White, 53, of 209 Carlton Drive and three accomplices made up stories of racial vandalism and phone harassment and blamed the contractor, who recently performed renovations on a house she owned in Hampton Heights. Spartanburg Public Safety Director Tony Fisher said Rankins-White, who is black, apparently thought no one would wise up to her scheme, which unraveled after investigators traced “harassing” phone calls back to the house under renovation and her cell phone.
Rankins-White wanted to obtain money from the contractor, who is white, or have him arrested, Fisher said.
“I felt like so many other people felt when this happened, because initially this was a legitimate incident that has occurred in our community, and we have to accept the fact it symbolizes something bad in our community and the people who live there,” Fisher said. “Then it turns out someone, whose ancestors have been so impacted and hurt by the behavior behind this symbol, ends up using it for personal gain. For me, it was personally difficult, and it incensed me.”
Rankins-White was charged with five counts of filing a false police report, two counts of conspiracy and one count of telephone harassment.
Also charged with filing a false report, two counts of conspiracy and telephone harassment were her daughter, Erica D. White, 22, of 209 Carlton Drive and a man planning to buy the Hampton Heights house, Darrell Lee Miller, 37, of 203 S. Hampton Drive.
Rankins-White’s sister, Betty Goins, 56, of 253 Charlesworth Ave. was charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of filing a false police report.
Rankins-White and Goins refused to discuss the allegations as they were led from the police department in handcuffs Monday afternoon to be transported to the county jail. Miller turned himself in to police a short time later, and police continued to look for White Monday evening.
