German Chancellor Reject Jewish call to ban NPD
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reacted coolly to fresh calls to ban the National Democratic Party (NPD), telling the Juedische Allgemeine, a weekly published by the Central Council of Jews in Germany that “the problem of the extreme-right can be resolved by banning the party.”
Five regional interior ministers from the Social Democrats (SPD), partners in Merkel’s left-right coalition, had formed a working group that would push for a ban on the NPD.
The SPD accuses NPD of aggressively seeking to undermine Germany’s constitutional order. At a congress in Hamburg, the party endorsed a proposal calling for a ban on the party. Merkel, of the conservative Christian Union, said the NPD stood in opposition to the democratic values enshrined in the constitution.
The NPD has made inroads in regional politics in recent years, winning representation in the eastern states of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Whether or not to ban the NPD has been a long-running debate in Germany. A ban has the backing of several prominent politicians, including Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, but is likely to face legal hurdles. An attempt to have the Constitutional Court introduce a ban failed in 2003 after two years of bitter legal wrangling when it emerged that some members of the party who had given evidence were police informers. Merkel referred to this on Thursday, saying a new failed attempt to ban the party “would send the wrong signal”.
Notice how these jewish occupants are calling the German Nationalists “Neo-Nazis”.
