This is an old story, but it’s worth seeing if you missed it. The gods can be cruel when we make blatantly bad choices. White stabbed in the back by Latinos at church festival. For the first time since their son Joseph was stabbed to death at a
church function in June 2005 in southwest Detroit, John and Ana Wagner of Ann Arbor can begin the slow process of healing. After a six-day trial, a Wayne County jury deliberated less than two hours Tuesday before finding Latin Count gang members Mario Briones, 20, and Luis Hernandez Diaz, 16, guilty of first-degree murder. Southwest Detroit can also breathe easier. Diaz and his brother Daniel Hernandez Diaz, 20, were convicted earlier this month of killing Anaastacio Rodriguez, 20, because he belonged to the rival Suernos gang. Luis Hernandez Diaz is also suspected of killing a third man in a carjacking, said Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Christine Kowal, who prosecuted the Wagner and Rodriguez cases. Joseph Wagner, 21, was stabbed June 25, 2005, at a crowded festival in the parking lot of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

Police arrested Briones and Diaz in February. Wagner was a member of the By Any Means Necessary group, which has been a major organizing force to maintain affirmative action at the University of Michigan. In an effort to affect change in destitute areas, Joe had recently moved to Detroit , where he was living downtown in a neighborhood of boarded up buildings. Although Joe’s family had concerns about his safety, they admired his caring spirit and his devotion to the principles of ‘peace and equality.’ John Wagner said his family is greatly relieved after a difficult year. “It was not just our family that was affected, but this horrible crime these men committed impacted their own families and their community,” he said. Kowal said although there is no clear motive for Wagner’s murder,
testimony indicated he might have been mistaken for a Suernos member because he was wearing his blue Detroit Tigers cap tipped to the right in the Suernos gang style, and he was wearing a blue shirt, the rival gang’s colors.

  1. such a sad story. Joe was one of my very good friends in High School and was a great person. Sad that he was taken so early in his life. A GREAT MAN TAKEN BY THE SCUM OF THE EARTH.

  2. I met Joe in 2003 at Eastern Michigan University. He was my very first friend I made as a freshman in college. Joe was always so gentle, caring, and inspiring. His murder is a crime against humanity, and quite ironic, as he was murder by members of a minority that he fought so hard for. I am thinking about Joe today as the protests on Wall Street are going on. I know Joe would be instrumental in mobilizing youth in our area to speak out. I am compelled to do something about our current state of affairs, and feel I’m given strength by the presence Joe’s loving spirit. Joe was truly an angel, incarnate. And like so many powerful leaders of peace, I am confident he will continue inspiring even more people for years to come after his passing.
