In a scathing rebuke delivered on Thursday, US Ambassador David Pressman accused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of isolating his country from the Western “community of democracies.” Pressman’s wide-reaching critique highlighted several grievances against Budapest and underscored the importance of maintaining ties beyond “temporary” leadership.
“The Orban government’s decision to distance itself from the Western democratic community is deeply concerning,” Pressman declared. He emphasized that the United States would not allow its relationship with Hungary to be contingent upon the preferences of any single administration. In a clear warning to Budapest, Pressman asserted, “While Hungary waits, we will act.”
The ambassador’s remarks were delivered at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, during an event commemorating Hungary’s 25th anniversary of NATO accession. The CEU, founded by Hungarian-born US billionaire George Soros, has faced increased scrutiny and restrictions under Orban’s administration, accused of exerting political influence through NGOs.
Pressman highlighted the significance of the CEU’s relocation to Vienna as emblematic of Hungary’s eastward pivot under Orban’s leadership. He lamented the sacrifice of academic freedom and intellectual diversity in exchange for political expediency, characterizing it as a loss for Hungary’s democratic values.
Citing Budapest’s cordial relations with Moscow and its divergent stance on the Ukraine conflict, Pressman identified major points of contention. He criticized Hungary’s refusal to align with NATO’s unified approach towards Russia, accusing Budapest of disregarding the security concerns of fellow alliance members.
“This is not the approach of the Transatlantic alliance,” Pressman asserted, emphasizing the importance of unity within NATO in the face of external threats.
Pressman also condemned Hungarian politicians for exploiting nationalist sentiments and propagating anti-American rhetoric. He characterized such rhetoric as “wild” and “dangerously unhinged,” warning against the erosion of democratic values and the normalization of anti-American sentiment in Hungarian politics.
In outlining expectations for Hungary, Pressman called for transparency, dialogue, and a commitment to democracy. He stressed that Washington required NATO members to align with its strategic objectives, even in cases of disagreement on other issues.
Pressman’s rebuke underscored the importance of upholding democratic principles and maintaining solidarity within the transatlantic alliance. He urged Hungary to reconsider its policies and embrace a more cooperative approach that aligns with the values of the Western democratic community.
