The unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, escalated over the weekend as heavily armed gangs targeted government buildings, including the National Palace, and set fire to parts of the Interior Ministry using petrol bombs.
These attacks are part of a wave of violence that has seen gangs wreak havoc across the city, torching airports, police stations, and prisons, resulting in the release of over 4,000 inmates.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the United States and the European Union have evacuated their diplomats, with the US declaring a state of emergency. Border Patrol agents in Miami have been placed on alert in anticipation of an influx of Haitian migrants.
At the center of the chaos is Jimmy Cherizier, known as ‘Barbecue,’ the leader of the infamous ‘G9 and Family’ gang. Cherizier, now considered the most powerful figure in Haiti, gained notoriety for his brutal tactics, including burning victims alive.
As the violence persists, a disturbing video has surfaced depicting a member of a gang dubbed the ‘cannibal’ gang consuming human flesh from a burning corpse. While some videos have been removed, reports indicate that these atrocities are not isolated incidents, with similar acts occurring in the past.
The recent surge in violence, orchestrated by Cherizier’s gang, aims to overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry’s attempt to return to Haiti was thwarted by ongoing gun battles around the international airport, preventing his landing.
Cherizier, a 47-year-old former police officer, was dismissed from the force in 2018 due to his alleged involvement in heinous crimes, including the massacre in the La Saline slums. Despite his removal from the police force, Cherizier continued to wield influence, eventually assuming leadership of the ‘G9 and Family’ gang.
With Haiti teetering on the brink of further chaos, Cherizier’s ascent to power looms ominously, posing significant challenges to the stability and security of the nation. As international condemnation mounts, calls for decisive action to combat gang violence in Haiti grow louder, with neighboring countries like El Salvador offering their own experiences as a blueprint for eradicating such criminal elements.
