odesa hit by russia march 2024

In the heart-wrenching aftermath of an overnight Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Odesa, seven lives were tragically lost, including that of a mother and her baby, marking another grim chapter in the relentless bombing campaign targeting civilians.

The deceased mother, identified by her sister as Anna, was in her second-floor bedroom when the strike occurred. A florist and decorator, Anna perished in the attack, leaving behind her surviving husband and daughter. Among the casualties was also a two-year-old boy named Timofii, discovered under rubble on the ground floor. Sadly, he lost his life a day before his third birthday.

Odesa City Municipality reported that authorities were searching for up to 12 individuals, including four children, in the aftermath of the attack that left the front facade of an apartment block in ruins.

Andriy Kostin, Prosecutor General of Ukraine, emphasized that there was no military facility nearby, categorizing the attack as a deliberate targeting of civilians. The city declared Sunday as a day of mourning to honor the lives lost.

The assault involved 17 Iranian-made suicide drones aimed at civilian apartment blocks. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 14 of them, but three managed to hit their targets, resulting in tragic consequences, including deaths, injuries, and extensive property damage.

President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the urgent need to bolster the country’s air defense capabilities in the face of such attacks. He stressed the importance of acquiring more air defense systems and missiles, emphasizing that these measures are crucial to saving lives.

Ukraine, facing the ongoing aggression from Russia entering its third year, has been appealing to its western allies for increased military aid. Zelensky, in a plea for support, warned of dire consequences, stating that “millions” could perish if US lawmakers do not approve President Joe Biden’s $60 billion aid request for Kyiv. However, Republican leadership in the House has thus far resisted holding a vote on providing additional funding.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is contemplating whether to utilize its last remaining source of funding for military aid to support Ukraine’s war effort against Russia, even without guarantees of Congress replenishing those funds. The situation underscores the complexities and challenges faced by Ukraine in its struggle for survival against the relentless onslaught.
