During a meeting of Poland’s National Security Council, President Andrzej Duda outlined a major objective for his Washington visit – convincing US leaders to endorse an increased spending requirement for NATO members, aimed at sending a strong message to Russia. Duda proposed that NATO nations should be compelled to allocate a minimum of 3% of their GDP to defense, up from the current 2% guideline. He expressed his intent to present this case during a meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Duda emphasized the need for a robust response to Russian aggression and advocated for enhancing the military capabilities of the North Atlantic alliance. Alongside raising the spending threshold, he suggested making it more obligatory, establishing a level “below which it is absolutely not recommended to go.”
The Polish President’s remarks coincided with his visit to the US, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Poland’s NATO accession. Duda underscored the importance of strengthening defenses to deter potential attacks on NATO and asserted that countries capable of self-defense would be less vulnerable. Poland is planning to double its military size by 2035 in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, increasing defense spending to over 4% of GDP this year.
NATO’s spending guidelines have been contentious, with most members falling short of the 2% minimum. Duda’s proposal aligns with former US President Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO allies for insufficient defense spending. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg claimed that 18 members are on track to meet the 2% target this year. Duda intends to discuss his proposal with Stoltenberg and Poland’s allies, emphasizing Poland’s commitment to collective defense, citing past collaborations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.
