Amid escalating tensions and concerns over Russia’s threats to Romania’s sovereignty and national identity, Romania has embarked on a monumental endeavor: the construction of what is slated to become the largest NATO military base in Europe. Surpassing even Germany’s Ramstein base in scale, the expansion of the existing Romanian 57th Air Base at Mihail Kogălniceanu is underway, with a staggering price tag of around €2.5 billion ($2.7 billion).

According to reports from Euronews, the ambitious project aims to transform the air base into a sprawling complex akin to a small city, covering an expansive area of nearly 3,000 hectares with a perimeter stretching over 30 kilometers. Nicolae Crețu, the current commander of the 57th Air Base, outlined the comprehensive scope of the expansion, which includes facilities ranging from maintenance hangars and fuel depots to ammunition storage, living quarters, and even educational and medical amenities.

The expanded base is envisioned to serve as a permanent home for up to 10,000 NATO personnel and their families, boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure such as new runways, weapons platforms, and aircraft hangars. Additionally, provisions are being made to cater to the needs of service members’ families, with plans for schools, kindergartens, shops, and a hospital within the complex.

This ambitious initiative builds upon earlier investments in Romania’s air bases, with substantial funds allocated to enhancing facilities at Air Base 71 near Campia Turzii, establishing a training center at Cincu, and bolstering operations at Mihail Kogălniceanu. The strategic significance of Romania has grown increasingly apparent to both the United States and NATO, as the region becomes a focal point for security and defense operations.

With fighter aircraft already operating from bases across Romania and the US Air Force conducting surveillance missions with MQ-9 Reaper drones from Campia Turzii, the country’s role in regional security efforts is expanding. Moreover, the recent inauguration of the European F-16 Training Center at the Gheorghe Mociorniță 86th Air Base underscores Romania’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and fostering closer cooperation with NATO allies.

Commenting on the significance of the Mihail Kogălniceanu base, military and political analyst Dorin Popescu highlighted its pivotal role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, foreseeing a prolonged engagement in the region. Commander Crețu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the base’s adaptability to meet evolving security challenges, including the potential deployment of ground forces for special operations.

Currently hosting approximately 5,000 US and Romanian personnel, the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base is poised to emerge as a linchpin of NATO’s defense infrastructure, ensuring readiness and resilience in the face of geopolitical uncertainties. As tensions persist and security dynamics evolve, Romania’s strategic investment in bolstering its military capabilities underscores its commitment to safeguarding regional stability and defending shared democratic values.

  1. 2,5 billion for 10,000 troops? That’s basically like an expensive doghouse in the current conflict. Russia can throwaway 10 times that on one sector of the front and Ukraine losses are probably many times that too. If there’s one thing NATO knows how to do it’s cosplaying to make it look like they’re a real fighting force.

    • This is just another attempt by SataNato and the sclerotic West to intimidate Russia which will never match Russia as the biggest landmass on the planet or militarily, as witness the success of the Russian militaary in Ukraine which is rapidly becomming a failed state.
Add to that the fact that SataNato and the sclerotic West are enraged that Vladimir Putin won a stunning 88% majority in the Russian elections, so it comes as no surprise that the recent terrorist outrage in Russia has the West’s grubby fingerprints all over it as a bloddy retaliation against Vladimir Putin who the West will have to live with for the next six years.
Isis is just another franchise, for want of a better word, of corporate America, the Ultra Satanic Agency, together with SataNato. Russia could eat the hated E.U.S.S.R and America for breakfast and spit out the bones. It is only the sclerotic West that is saying Russia is a threat to Romania and the West, in reality, it is SataNato and the West that are threatening Russia and interfering in Russia’s internat affairs in their vain attempt to remove Vladimir Putin from office and put a pro-Western lacky in the Kremlin just like the alcoholoc Boris Yeltsin who almost bankrupted Russia.
